Alex Rodriguez
Artist Statement

My art practice is about self-worth. I reveal my insecurities and self-love in my art through the use of diary entries, music, and sculptural manifestations of my identity to symbolize what I discover during moments of solitude. I have a history of focusing my energy outwards rather than inwards, it has become apparent to me that I’m terrified of being alone with myself. Creating work allows me the solitude I need to discover my self-worth.
Bio
Alex Rodriguez is an Oakland based artist that works in ceramics, textiles, and multidisciplinary installation. Alex was born and raised in Houston, TX, and received their BFA from San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI). Their art is driven by diary entries and the sentimentality of personal relationships. In their hometown, Alex was very involved in the art community when employed at the Contemporary Arts Museum of Houston as a Teen Council Member, where they organized readings, music shows, and co-curated a photography show in The Menil Collection.
In the Bay Area, Alex has had the opportunity to curate and show in the Diego Rivera Gallery (SF), The Convent Arts Collective (SF), Delaplane (SF), and Deco Art (Oakland). In part with their art practice, Alex was one of three co-creators of Dear Diary. Dear Diary (2018-'19) was a queer curatorial collective that organized community-based events and shows around approaching topics of the social and political through a childlike vulnerability and honesty.
